California permit and license fees in 2026
Updated October 2026
What you will pay
Why the numbers change
California DMV fees are set by state law and adjusted periodically. The figures below come from the DMV website; the totals you see at the counter may also include a service fee or a county surcharge.
How to pay
- Most DMV offices accept cash, debit cards, and credit cards. Some accept checks.
- Many states let you pre-pay online and walk in only for the test.
- If you are under 18, a parent usually has to sign the payment receipt as well.
Refunds and retakes
Application windows and retake fees are set by DMV and change over time. If you don't pass, you usually pay only the next-attempt fee (if any) on the next visit. Confirm the current rule and how long an approved application stays valid on the DMV website.
